CE Virtual Workshop: Healing Trauma with Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal Theory (PVT), developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, revolutionizes our understanding of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) by explaining how our physiological state shapes emotional regulation, social engagement, and responses to trauma. Central to PVT is the role of the vagus nerve, which influences our ability to feel safe, connect with others, and recover from stress and trauma.

PVT offers a transformative lens for trauma treatment, emphasizing that healing is not solely a cognitive process—it is physiological. By understanding the body’s response to danger and safety, clinicians can support clients in restoring nervous system flexibility, building resilience, and reclaiming connection and well-being.

Presenter Meruyet Akimbayeva is a multicultural, bilingual Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Polyvagal-informed therapist, and international speaker offering a holistic, neuroscience-based approach to mental health.

CE Virtual Workshop: Adoption Competency in Clinical Practice

Adoption is not a one-time event—it is a lifelong experience that shapes identity, attachment, and emotional development. This training is for therapists looking to deepen their adoption competency and better support adopted clients and their families in clinical practice.

Attendees will learn about the 7 Core Issues of Adoption; how adoption intersects with grief, trauma, and attachment; identity formation—especially for transracial adoptees; and therapist self-awareness. Real-world case examples will ground the discussion and participants will gain practical tools they can implement right away.

Nicole Wiesman is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and co-founder of PFECT, a Downers Grove-based practice supporting children, teens, families, and couples. She specializes in school anxiety, family systems work, and adoption-competent care.
